Sue Winspear commenced her new job as Auditor General of the Cayman Islands on 8 July 2016. She succeeds Alastair Swarbrick who left the post in October 2015 and Garnet Harrison who has acted in the position in the interim.

Ms. Winspear most recently held the post of Executive Leader in the National Audit Office in the United Kingdom after spending her career as a senior finance executive in various government departments. She is very familiar with the political environment having provided briefings to the Public Accounts Committee on several occasions.

Ms. Winspear takes over the leadership of the Office of the Auditor General with a staff of about 20 employees at a very crucial time. The Government has recently made some significant changes to how it will be reporting its financial results moving to a biannual budgetary cycle. As well, Government has recently undertaken a programme to change how it delivers programs and services through its Project Future initiatives.

Arriving at her office, the new Auditor General told her staff: “It is a privilege to be appointed as Auditor General for the Cayman Islands. This Office plays a critical role in the governance framework of the Cayman Islands and while I know the main job we have is to hold government to account, I also look forward to helping the Government manage public resources and deliver effective programmes and services.”

Ms. Winspear comes from the UK where government operations are significantly larger than the Cayman Islands. However, there are many similarities in the challenges government faces in the delivery of their services in order to be relevant to their population. She noted that she will have a lot to learn in a very short time and looks forward to engaging with senior government officials in the coming weeks to get up to speed as quickly as possible.

“I am very excited to be here. My time here in the Cayman Islands will provide my family and me with an amazing experience. I look forward to learning as much as I can about these beautiful islands and the people who live here,” said Ms. Winspear.
